Caring for your signet

Wear it well.
Keep the mark sharp.

A signet is meant to be worn every day, and it will gather fine marks with wear. A little care keeps the engraving crisp.

Everyday wear

Gold is strong, but it is softer than the things it meets every day. Take your ring off for:

  • the gym, heavy lifting and contact sport
  • gardening, building and work with tools
  • swimming pools and spas, because chlorine can dull and weaken gold over time
  • cleaning with bleach or household chemicals

Put it on last, after hand cream, sunscreen and fragrance.

Cleaning

  1. Soak your ring for a few minutes in warm water with a drop of mild dishwashing liquid.
  2. Brush gently with a very soft toothbrush, including the engraving and the inside of the band.
  3. Rinse in clean warm water, with the plug in.
  4. Pat dry with a soft, lint-free cloth.

A few times a year is plenty. Avoid toothpaste, baking soda and abrasive cloths: they scratch the polish and wear down fine lines.

The engraved face

Laser engraving is crisp but shallow. Hard polishing, especially on a machine, rounds off its edges, and repeated polishing will soften it away. Brush the face clean rather than buffing it, and if a jeweller ever polishes your ring, ask them to keep away from the face.

Your ring is not made to press wax. Laser engraving is too shallow to leave a clear impression.

White and rose gold

White gold is often finished with a bright rhodium plating, which wears gently over the years to reveal the warmer white gold beneath. A jeweller can re-plate it if you prefer the brighter colour.

Rose gold takes its colour from copper. It can deepen slightly with time and wear, which many people like.

Storing it

Keep your ring in its box or a soft pouch, on its own. Gold scratches gold, and a loose ring in a drawer will collect marks from everything around it. Take it off before sleep if you wear it on a finger that catches on bedding.

Polishing and alterations

We make each ring once, to order. We don't offer polishing, repairs or alterations after delivery, beyond what our warranty and the Australian Consumer Law cover.

A good local jeweller can give your ring a light hand polish when you want one. Please contact us before anyone alters your ring if it might have a fault: work by others can make it harder for us to assess a warranty claim.

Insurance and records

Keep your receipt, the photograph we send of your finished ring, and an extract from the Register with your insurer's records. The extract records the ring, its gold and its mark. It is not a valuation; your insurer may ask for one.

If the ring changes hands, write to us with its number and we add the new owner's initials to the Register. The ring stays where it is.

Speak to a jeweller

Bring us the mark.

An old ring, a bookplate, a wax impression, or just a family name and a story. A jeweller will reply within one business day.
